Investment banks are struggling to hire senior information security professionals, and continue to turn to other sectors for expertise as well as fighting for the top people within competitor firms.
BNP Paribas has just made a major hire for its tech business in the U.S., but has turned to strategy consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton for expertise.
John Rogers has just joined BNP Paribas’ investment bank as head of information security for the Americas. He was previously a principal and chief technologist at Booz Allen Hamilton in New York.
He joined Booz Allen Hamilton in 2013 as a senior associate, having previously worked at management consultancy Protiviti. His only previous banking experience was at Bank of America, where he was a VP and information security specialist between 2004-2009.
Information security and cyber security intelligence talent has been in demand across investment banking for a couple of years now, particularly at the senior level. J.P. Morgan, Citi and BAML have all made pushes into this area recently.
One of the more recent CISO hires within banking was Standard Chartered’s Cherie McGuire in June last year. Again, she came from outside banking, having previously headed up information security at Synantec and worked as a director in information security at Microsoft.
Banks traditionally relied in external contractors or consultants to work on security efforts, but the focus in recent years has been to expand this capability in-house.
