The vast majority of investment banks have now closed their summer internship programmes to applications. But, like the full-time positions, a select band of students have already received offers.
As most people trying to break into banking know, the summer internship is the most obvious route into a full-time job. We’ve looked at a number of interns going into investment banks this summer to offer an insight into what it takes to get a graduate investment banking job now.
Christian Mendez, Goldman Sachs, securities
Christian secured a summer internship this year at Goldman Sachs after completing a spring insight week last year within its sales, trading and structuring division. Spring weeks are an increasingly important starting point for any aspiring investment banker, so you need to get in early. He’s studying Economics at Nottingham University and has also completed internships at ICAP and BNY Mellon. He’s president of the economics and finance society at Nottingham.
Kevin Gu, Barclays investment bank, IBD
Kevin is studying Economics at the London School of Economics, and is due to graduate in 2018. He spent last summer at private equity firm DealGlobe, but this will be his first banking internship. He’s president of events and special projects within LSE’s business and finance society and has also been involved with Citi-seeded charity Allrise, which partnered with the Children’s Cancer Foundation of Singapore.
Edward Kerr, Morgan Stanley, investment banking and capital markets
Edward is studying Economics at University College London (UCL), but hails from Leeds and spent last summer at Rothschild’s global advisory division in the city. This is his only banking internship so far, but Edward has been involved in various banking-focused activities at UCL including winning the IBD series in 2014 and taking the role of director of events at The Economists’ Society.
Daniel Parekh-Hill, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, IBD
Daniel converted a spring internship into a summer offer, having spent last April in BAML’s investment banking and global markets division. He also completed Spring internships at HSBC and ICAP, and received offers from both. He’s studying Economics at LSE and was marketing officer for last year’s Alternative Investments Conference, organised by students at the university.
William Ugwu, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, global markets
William is studying finance at Durham University and has the position of careers officer at the university’s African and Caribbean Society, which gives him access to numerous employers on campus. He has interned at St James’s Place and also completed the Spring week at Lazard last year. Outside of finance and academic achievement, he’s spent over a year as a care assistant at a home for the elderly.
Tom Cracknell, Citi, markets
Tom is studying accounting and finance at LSE, where he’s also head of tastings at the LSE Champagne Society. He started his banking experience with a Spring insight at UBS in 2015, and was offered a place on its summer programme last year. He’s also worked as a Spring intern within HSBC’s global markets division and spent a month last summer at ICAP.
Seye Fasan, Goldman Sachs, securities
Seye has racked up an impressive number of internships over the past two years. He’s completed a Spring internship within BAML’s sales and trading division, been a summer analyst in the markets division of J.P. Morgan, spent two insight weeks at BlackRock and is now set to join Goldman Sachs this summer. He’s studying Natural Sciences at UCL.
Arun Bhahirathan, Deutsche Bank, corporate finance
Arun is studying Government and Economics at LSE and has been involved with various trading and banking focused societies during his time there. He’s completed a Spring internship within HSBC’s retail and commercial banking businesses and also worked for two months as a consultant at Cambridge Consulting Network. He has also worked as a marketing officer at both LSE’s AIC conference and its emerging markets forum.
Raffi Chobanyan, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, global treasury
Raffi has a slightly unusual background, in that it seems more focused on VC and entrepreneurialism rather than investment banking. He’s a UCL ambassador to student accelerator programme Kickstart London and is a member of UCL’s entrepreneur’s society and spent the summer as a venture capital intern at Granatus Ventures. He’s also spent time at consultants Oliver Wyman. He’s studying Economics at UCL.
Udonna Obi, J.P. Morgan, sales
Udonna’s last investment banking internship is a Spring week at Goldman Sachs, but he’s set to join J.P. Morgan’s sales team this summer. He’s studying a Master of Engineering at UCL and is also a member of the Afro Caribbean Society there. Udonna has also completed an insight week at Morgan Stanley.
Arlind Lushta, Goldman Sachs, securities
Arlind has spent a fair amount of time working with Goldman Sachs towards this summer internship. Last year he completed a Spring week at Goldman, and has since been representing the bank as a campus ambassador at UCL. There, he’s studying Engineering. Arlind also went to UBS as part of its City of London Business Traineeship and has worked as a marketing intern at tech vendor Sunguard.
Jehane Habbar-Baylac. J.P. Morgan, sales
Jehane has multiple internships in various financial centres. Her upcoming summer internship is in J.P. Morgan’s London equity sales desk, but she’s also spent three months at SocGen in New York within IBD. She’s also spent time in private banking – at SocGen and Luxair in Luxemboutrg. At UCL, where she studies Economics and Business with East European Studies, she’s also a transition mentor, helping new students get to grips with campus life.
Giorgia di Summa, Evercore, investment banking
Giorgia is studying a Masters degree in finance at Bocconi in Italy, where she was until recently the head of the students’ trading club. Before securing the internship at Evercore – which has had a particularly good year – she spent the summer last year in J.P. Morgan’s credit research team in London. She also has an undergraduate degree in Economics and Finance from Bocconi.
Egon D’Argento, Morgan Stanley, investment banking and capital markets
Egon is studying for a degree in Management from the University of Warwick. He’s secured a front office internship at Morgan Stanley, but his experience to date has been in the middle office. He spent last summer as a financial and risk intern at the Nationwide Building Society in Swindon, and has also worked as a Spring intern at Deloitte in London. At Warwick, he’s in various finance-focused societies.
